Randonnée Corse GR20 | 5 alternatives spectaculaires

Randonnée en Corse GR20 | 5 alternatives spectaculaires

\n

The GR20 is a dream for many. It has become the absolute benchmark when talking about hiking in Corsica, to the point that some feel like they are missing out if they don't do it. However, this myth also has its downsides: extreme difficulty, saturated refuges, rigid logistics, and an atmosphere that is sometimes more competitive than contemplative.

\n

We believe that the GR20 remains an incredible adventure, but it is largely overexposed compared to other equally beautiful routes. If your goal is to discover Corsica on foot, you might be better off bypassing the GR20 "highway" to explore wilder, freer, and just as spectacular trails.

\n

In this article, we question the cult of the GR20 and present five alternatives that are just as, if not more, worthy of your vacation time.

Corsica GR20 Hike: a myth… that can disappoint

\n

The GR20 crosses Corsica from north to south over approximately 188 km, with more than 13,000 m of cumulative positive elevation gain. It is one of the most demanding marked trails in Europe. In practice, you walk between twelve and sixteen days depending on your pace, on often rocky and technical terrain, with exposed ridge sections.

\n

On paper, it sounds appealing. In reality, it's not always the grand escape you imagine. In high season, the refuges are saturated: reservations are mandatory several weeks, sometimes several months in advance. As a direct consequence, you lose the freedom of your pace.

\n

Another underestimated point: the atmosphere. With the popularity of the GR20, the trail attracts a large public, sometimes ill-prepared, generating very busy sections and even traffic jams on technical passages, far from the image of a wild trail.

\n

Finally, the prevailing discourse suggests that to experience the "real Corsica", you absolutely must do the GR20. We do not share this idea: other routes offer the same intensity with fewer constraints and more freedom.

\n

How to choose your long-distance hike in Corsica

\n

Before rushing to the GR20 because everyone is talking about it, ask yourself a few simple questions: what are you really looking for? An extreme sporting challenge, varied landscapes, time to recharge, village encounters?

\n\n\"Shopify\n

Your selection criteria

\n
    \n
  • Your experience in the mountains and on technical terrain
  • \n
  • Your desire for solitude or, on the contrary, for conviviality in a refuge
  • \n
  • The duration of your holidays and your ability to undertake several days of sustained effort
  • \n
  • Your tolerance for logistical stress (reservations, weather, schedules)
  • \n
  • Your overall budget
  • \n
  • Your relationship to risk (aerial ridges, exposed passages)
  • \n
\n

From there, the GR20 is no longer the only option but one among others. The Mare e Monti or Mare a Mare often prove to be more consistent with your level and your way of traveling.

\n

Five spectacular alternatives to the GR20 in Corsica

\n

Mare e Monti North

\n

About ten stages for 140 km between Calenzana and Centuri. Less technical than the GR20 but just as rich in emotions, with perched villages, fragrant maquis, Calanche de Piana, beaches of Cargèse or Galéria and regular passages through the Corsica Regional Natural Park.

\n\"Shopify\n\n

Mare a Mare North

\n

East-west crossing of about ten stages (≈140 km), alternating coastline, forests, mountains and villages. Less frequented than the GR20, peaceful atmosphere and friendly accommodation: ideal for a first great Corsican crossing.

\n

Mare a Mare South

\n

Porto-Vecchio → Propriano over approximately 74 km. Gentler terrain, but spectacular coastal and inland landscapes, rivers for swimming and views of the Mediterranean. Perfect for a week combining hiking and culture.

\n

Mare e Monti South

\n

Porticcio → Tizzano over 60 km (5-6 stages). The most accessible variant of the Mare e Monti: coastal panoramas, low technicality, ideal for families or hikers who fear the pace of the GR20.

\n

Customs officers' path of Cap Corse

\n

Easy path along the northern tip of the island: wild coast, Genoese towers, seaside villages and isolated coves. Can become the heart of a trip to Cap Corse, complemented by day loops.

\n

Other off-the-beaten-path Corsican hikes

\n
\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
Route Main feature
Monte Senino (NW) Breathtaking views of the Gulf of Porto
Capu a Cuccula (NW) More moderate high mountain
Girolata via Punta di a Literniccia Wild approach to the iconic village
A Maniccia (center) Less crowded summit for experts
Punta di a Vacca Morta (SE) Panorama of lakes and peaks, accessible
\n
\n

These itineraries often require good preparation and sometimes a vehicle to access the starting points, but they offer what the GR20 guarantees less and less: the feeling of truly being off the beaten path.

\n

Quick FAQ about the GR20 and hiking in Corsica

\n

Is the GR20 suitable for a first long-distance mountain hike?

\n

We do not recommend it as a first experience. Its duration, elevation gain and technical terrain make it a demanding trail. Start instead with a Mare a Mare, a Mare e Monti or several day hikes.

\n

Can you discover the real Corsica without doing the GR20?

\n

Yes, a thousand times yes. Villages, valleys, coastline and local encounters are just as representative of the island. A Mare a Mare North or South, or the customs officers' path, offers an authentic immersion.

\n

What is the best time for a hike in Corsica?

\n

Late spring and early autumn: bearable temperatures, fewer crowds, magnificent light. For easy coastal routes, the season can extend, but always check the weather and local restrictions.

\n

How to prepare physically if you are aiming for a trek in Corsica?

\n

Do many day hikes, get your legs used to elevation gain and test your loaded backpack for several hours. Running or cycling complement the preparation, but nothing replaces walking on varied terrain.

What to remember before planning your hike in Corsica

\n

The GR20 remains mythical but is not suitable for everyone. Its difficulty, crowds and logistical constraints encourage re-evaluating other trails. The Mare e Monti and Mare a Mare offer equally powerful landscapes, more freedom and less pressure. Confidential summits like Monte Senino or Punta di a Vacca Morta add a dimension of adventure sometimes lost on the GR20.

\n

When choosing, listen to your deep desires rather than the myth: do you want to tick off a prestigious name or live a hiking experience that suits you? To extend your connection with the island, explore our universe around Corsican culture and the sea on the Cultura Corsa page or discover our online items and in-store to keep some of that hiking energy in your daily life.
